Food Packaging Bag Materials: A Guide to Multilayer Structure and PE vs PP
Specifying flexible packaging for food typically means balancing multilayer construction, the function of each layer, food-contact safety, and the direction of material substitution. Viewed together, these factors indicate what a pouch or bag can hold and how long it can protect the product.
In terms of structure, a common build uses PE or CPP on the inner layer, PA or PET on the outer layer, and possibly EVOH or PVDC in the middle; metallized film or aluminum foil may also be chosen. How the inner, middle, and outer layers are combined and divided determines the package's suitability for the contents and its shelf-life performance.
Safety follows a different logic for food packaging than for non-food packaging. PP and PE contain no plastic additives and do not release toxic substances during use, so they are often given first consideration for food-contact applications.
Each layer has a job to do. PE and CPP offer better heat-sealing properties, making closure easier; PA and PET print well, so they suit the outer layer where graphics are shown; PVDC and EVOH provide better barrier performance and help prevent oxidation; metallized film and aluminum foil block light well, which is suitable for products that should not be exposed to light. These materials perform distinct functions and come together to form a complete packaging bag.
PVC packaging is also shifting. Almost all cling film used to be made of PVC, but because of safety concerns it is now gradually being replaced by PE cling film. For the same application, safety can change the final material choice.
The PE versus PP comparison is equally important. PE bags are softer, with mechanical properties weaker than PP, and are typically seen in supermarket shopping bags, cling film, and trash bags. PP is harder and anisotropic—a notch makes it easy to tear—with good mechanical properties and better high-temperature performance than PE. Typical examples include bread bags, fruit bags, and structures such as E/Al/PE and Al/PE. This is why soft bags and rigid bags often rely on different base materials.
