Spout Pouch Sustainability Roadmap: Harmlessness, Composting and Source Reduction

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

In flexible packaging, spout pouches are moving toward a clearer sustainability framework built on three trends: harmlessness, composting and reduction at source.

Harmlessness. Post-trial research indicates that degradable spout pouches undergo major shifts in chemical and mechanical performance within a short period after landfill burial. Eventually, they can biodegrade into completely harmless fragments, cutting waste, helping to control environmental pollution and returning to nature.

Composting. As landfill and incineration face growing restrictions in recent years, composting has drawn renewed attention. It can lower harmful gas emissions, and the resulting compost can act as an organic fertiliser to improve soil. For eco-friendly degradable spout pouches, development therefore needs to move toward composting to better match the environmental sector's broader requirements.

Reduction at source. This approach targets the front end: producing fewer spout pouches in order to use fewer resources and create less waste. The industry is researching, developing and promoting degradable plastic packaging and highly filled inorganic materials. Reduction is not only about using less; it also means delivering the same packaging function with less material.

Overall, environmentally degradable spout pouches can effectively ease and curb environmental pollution, yet their production technology and wider adoption still require further development, with important implications for energy use and environmental protection. Photodegradation of plastic packaging can save raw materials and petroleum, is easier for the environment to break down, and carries strategic value for resource use. These three paths share one goal, even though they start from different points.
