Controlling Pouch Breakage in Spout Pouch Production: Key Checkpoints in Bag Making and Spout Insertion
Breakage in spout pouches rarely happens at random — it clusters around two operations: bag making and spout insertion. Cutting losses means locking down each control point, one by one, along the production line.
On the stand-up bag side, punching, bottom gusset forming and bottom heat sealing all deserve close watch. The four-layer-to-two-layer transition zone carries the highest risk of splitting, and a cross-sealing jaw on its own cannot deliver the strength required — an additional heat-sealing bar is usually fitted, and for certain products the seal is further reinforced.
A spouted stand-up pouch must also open easily; if it does not, suction cups struggle to pull the pouch mouth apart and spout insertion stalls. Surface friction must stay low, and static has to be eliminated during bag making so that pouches do not cling to one another — otherwise the spout-sealing machine will have trouble picking up a bag.
In China today, spouts are attached to stand-up pouches in two main ways: manual insertion and heat-seal insertion. In the heat-seal route, temperature travels to the spout through conduction and melts it, welding it to the pouch's PE sealing layer to form a secure bond.
Thanks to their strong shelf appeal, stand-up spout pouches have been adopted across a wide range of sectors, most visibly in daily chemicals. Liquid soap, shampoo and similar items now commonly come in these pouches — finely printed, easier to transport and carry — and they are steadily displacing conventional plastic and glass bottles.
Liquid stand-up spout pouches are not limited to juice, soymilk, jelly or sweet bean sauce pouches; they also see wide use in laundry detergent pouches, fabric softener pouches and other daily-chemical packaging — one pouch format serving very different product needs.
