Why Spout Pouches Stand Out in Beverage Packaging
Portability is where the spout pouch leaves most conventional pack formats behind. It slips easily into a backpack or even a pocket, and as the contents are consumed the pack flattens down with them, so it takes up less space and is simpler to carry whether you are heading to work, to school or outdoors.
Structurally, the format is built from two elements: the spout and the stand-up bag. The bag half uses the same construction as an ordinary four-seal stand-up pouch, although composite materials are generally specified so the pack can meet the requirements of different food packaging. The spout can be thought of as a standard bottle neck fitted with a straw. The two parts are bonded tightly together to create a beverage pack that can be drunk from directly, and because the structure is flexible there is no difficulty in sucking the contents out; once the pack is sealed the contents do not shift around easily, which makes it a very effective modern beverage package.
Soft drinks on today's market are mainly filled into PET bottles, composite foil packs and cans. As competition grows increasingly homogenised, upgrading the packaging is undoubtedly one of the most effective routes to differentiation. A spout pouch merges the reclosure of a PET bottle with the contemporary appeal of a composite foil pack, and its printing performance surpasses what conventional beverage packaging can deliver. Because it is based on the stand-up pouch format, its display area is clearly larger than a PET bottle's, and also better than that of pillow-type packs that cannot stand upright.
One point worth noting: as a member of the flexible packaging family, the spout pouch is not currently suitable for carbonated drinks. Where it does have a natural edge is in juices, dairy products, health drinks and jelly-type foods.
