SAC/TC170 Opens First Joint Drafting Meeting for Two Digital Printing Standards in Beijing

On March 1, 2011, the National Printing Standardization Technical Committee (SAC/TC170) convened the first joint working meeting of the drafting groups for two national digital printing standards in Beijing. Secretary-General Li An chaired the session. More than 10 experts and scholars took part, representing Shanghai Publishing and Printing College, Peking University Founder Group, the Shanghai Digital Printing Industry Association, the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Canon (China) Co., Ltd., Beijing Unis Graphic System Co., Ltd., Kodak (China) Investment Co., Ltd., Shanghai Tongkun Digital Printing Co., Ltd., and Nantong Yuanda Color Printing & Packaging Co., Ltd. Peking University Founder Group provided strong support for the event.

The drafting groups reviewed the first drafts of two standards: "Printing Technology Terminology: Digital Printing" and "Classification of Digital Printing." Following the state's principles and methods for terminology standards, the meeting screened the number and categories of terms in the first standard, trimming the proposed 509 terms to 105. It also examined the content of the second standard in detail and revised it to match national standard requirements and the realities of digital printing, reducing the proposed nine-category classification method to five categories. The meeting decided to hold the second joint working meeting in May 2011 at Shanghai Publishing and Printing College, where the second drafts would be discussed.

Developing digital printing standards is one of the key measures China's printing industry uses to regulate and guide sound, sustainable development in digital printing, and it has long been a major objective for the sector. SAC/TC170 places great importance on research and development of digital printing standards. It was expected that work would also begin in 2011 on two more national digital printing standards: "Quality Requirements and Inspection Methods for Digital Printing Products" and "Requirements and Test Methods for Digital Hard Proofing Systems."
