Quanzhou Nine Dragons Paper Advances Water Savings with White Water Recycling and Rainwater Reuse

May 9–15, 2021 marked China’s 30th National Urban Water Conservation Publicity Week.

During the campaign, the Quanzhou Municipal Urban Management Bureau, Quangang District Urban Management Bureau and Quanzhou Water Group jointly launched the 30th National Urban Water Conservation Publicity Week and Corporate Water-Saving Responsibility Action in Quangang District, spotlighting Fujian Refining & Petrochemical,

and other provincial-level water-saving units for their advanced water-saving experience, while encouraging more companies and organizations to join water conservation efforts, protect water resources through concrete steps and put green development into practice.

Nine Dragons Paper, based in the Quanzhou Taiwanese Investment Zone,

converts large quantities of waste paper into high-quality cartons and other products,

and has consistently pursued a path of “green ecology and circular use.” Its water-saving record is equally noteworthy.

When the plant was established in 2011, Quanzhou Nine Dragons brought in advanced international equipment and technology, then kept refining them, so its environmental and energy-consumption indicators outperform national standards.

For water use, every Nine Dragons papermaking line is equipped with an advanced white water (papermaking water) recovery and circulation system. The water reuse rate exceeds 90%, allowing production water to be recycled and reused.

In 2019, Quanzhou Nine Dragons began building its Phase II production line.

Taking Quanzhou’s rainy summers into account, the project included a purpose-built roof rainwater collection system.

Today, when rainfall is sufficient,

roughly 6,090 cubic meters of rainwater can be recovered each day.

This harvested rainwater is collected

and directed to the papermaking workshop for reuse.

Running alongside the rainwater collection system is the reuse water system at the Phase II project’s wastewater plant, which has an annual reuse volume of 810,006 cubic meters.

Over the years, Nine Dragons Paper’s green development philosophy has won strong recognition and active cooperation from employees. Each shift team has specific water-saving targets for every month and every day; water station staff work 24-hour rotating shifts and keep a close watch on control-room computer screens. “Whenever water consumption fluctuates, we immediately call each water use point to ask about the actual situation,” said an on-site duty worker.

To keep the 25-kilometer-long water intake pipeline operating smoothly, the company set up a dedicated water-saving contact phone line for communicating pressure and volume adjustments in daily production water use, maintaining the pipeline in good condition and maximizing water savings.

At present, Quanzhou Nine Dragons mainly produces kraft linerboard and eco-friendly kraft linerboard, operates 3 paper machines, and has a total designed annual capacity of 1 million tonnes.
