Next Cross-Strait Economic Agreement Review to Include Printing and Publishing in Opening Assessment
At the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on August 14, Zhang Zhijun, director of the mainland's Taiwan Affairs Office, met with Lin Zhongsen, chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation, and his delegation. Information disclosed after the meeting shows that the next implementation review of the cross-strait economic agreement will include publishing and printing in the assessment for further opening; SARFT also indicated that the mainland may expand opening to Taiwan in publishing and printing next year.
On the manner of cross-strait engagement, Lin Zhongsen said the two sides could first clarify important directions, thereby reducing abruptness and disputes. Responding to controversy within Taiwan over the service trade agreement, Zhang Zhijun reiterated to Lin that market opening is a major trend both sides must confront, that services are one of Taiwan's strengths, and that Taiwan should set aside doubts and concerns and use high-standard technology to tap the mainland's vast market.
Lin Zhongsen stressed that Taiwan is a pluralistic society where differing views are unavoidable. While cross-strait negotiations and external communication can be improved going forward, the broader direction of cooperation and opening should not be rolled back.
Lin Zhongsen and his delegation also called on a deputy director of the mainland's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. Jiang Jianguo noted that in publishing and printing, the mainland may further open to Taiwan next year. Zhang Fuhai, director of SARFT's Import Management Department, added that publishing and printing will be listed as items for further opening when the implementation of the cross-strait economic agreement is reviewed next time.
