Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

The 2019 CPIF China Packaging Innovation Conference is guided by the China Packaging Federation, supported by the United Nations Environment Programme, the China National Resources Recycling Association, the Plastics Recycling Association of the China Synthetic Resin Association and the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes, and co-hosted by Reed Exhibitions Group and the Packaging Promotion Association.

Scheduled for October 10-12, 2019, with registration on the 10th, the event takes place at the Shanghai Baohua Marriott Hotel. Global in outlook and future-facing, it trains its lens squarely on packaging innovation in the era of the new plastics economy.

High-end resources from around the world converge here: government, NGOs, industry associations, leading Fortune Global 500 brand owners, celebrated designers, world-renowned academics and innovative packaging companies. Four sub-forums span food and beverage, electronics and electrical appliances, e-commerce logistics, and food delivery, examining packaging innovation in the post-single-use-plastics era through the lenses of policy, industry, academia, research and application. The programme unpacks new plastics breakthroughs along with the new products, new technologies and new applications driving packaging innovation, helping the industry read the new opportunities, new challenges and new trends with confidence.

Come to the China Packaging Innovation Conference and see for yourself.

Governments and authoritative NGO organizations gather under one roof.

Sustainable packaging and plastics prevention and control policies and trends, decoded.

Official representatives from the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Ecological Organization (WECO), the GFHS Global Forum on Human Settlements, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, initiator of the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, the Global Aluminium Foil Organization, the China Packaging Federation, the China Logistics Society, the China National Resources Recycling Association, the Degradable Plastics Professional Committee of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, the Plastics Recycling Association of the China Synthetic Resin Association and the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes come together for a 361-degree, no-blind-spot reading of what the new plastics economy demands from packaging and where the openings for new packaging lie.

No design, no packaging.

Design leads brands, engineering joins hands with design, and together they map packaging innovation and design trends in the new plastics economy.

Seek development. YVES, Nestle's global head of packaging innovation, and David France, research fellow at Conagra, the world's second-largest frozen food company, are joined by general managers and packaging directors from P&G, Mengniu, Kraft Heinz, Uni-President, Wahaha, Yili, Unilever, Mondelez, Want Want, Ele.me, Meituan, Shiheng, The Alley and Haidilao to explore packaging innovation and design in the new plastics economy.

The future of e-commerce packaging.

In an age when everyone is online and digital transactions keep accelerating, where does e-commerce packaging go after 2025? Cost? Efficiency? Experience? Automation? Intelligence? Should the traditional priorities all give way to the new plastics economy? Can e-commerce parcels without single-use plastic packaging be smaller, smarter and more sustainable? And what are the globally renowned and mainstream Chinese e-commerce express players doing next?

At the e-commerce packaging break-out session co-hosted by Cainiao and CPIF, heads of the State Post Bureau, Cainiao, China's mainstream express networks, SF Express and Suning discuss where Chinese e-commerce express packaging is headed once single-use plastics are banned.

Top-tier professors and academics lend their weight.

Scholars from Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Sichuan University, South China University of Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Beijing Technology and Business University, Jiangnan University, Jinan University, Michigan State University in the United States, Yonsei University in Korea and Kobe University in Japan are part of the line-up.

The conference brings together recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, chief scientists of the 973 Programme, chief scientists of National Key R&D Programme projects, the first PhD in packaging in China and a figure of far-reaching influence in global food packaging, China's foremost authority on life-cycle assessment (LCA), China's leading name in biodegradable plastics and China's first mover in reverse logistics, all presenting the new materials, new technologies and new models of the post-single-use-plastics packaging era.

Innovators behind new plastic packaging products

New packaging debuts, as Chinese packaging pioneers respond head-on to the new plastics economy.

On show will be oxo-biodegradable plastics technology that designs an effective life cycle for plastics and gives them the ability to decompose naturally; plastic-free coated food board that cracks the recycling challenge of single-use paper cups; a new-generation transfer Fresnel lens that is PET-film-free, degradable and more environmentally friendly; biodegradable plastics with lower cost and shorter degradation cycles; and new paper-plastic packaging solutions that help end customers develop and iterate products in depth.

Packaging service providers and suppliers including Tianshen Group, BioLogiQ, Inc., Zhuhai Hongta Renheng Paper, Yuto Technology, Henkel, Shanghai Moda, Wenzhou Sanxing Environmental Protection, Jiangsu Jinsheng, Suzhou Jianji, Shanghai Shunhao International Trading, FIORINI INTERNATIONAL TRADING (SHANGHAI) Co. Ltd. and Shenzhen Maishidefu will bring brand-new products for on-site launches and displays, contributing ideas to sustainable packaging.

JD joins hands with CPIF: China's first e-commerce packaging testing standard and the 2.0 action plan.

On August 22, 2019, a date set to go down in the history of global e-commerce packaging, Mr. Duan Yanjian, head of packaging planning at JD, released the JD e-commerce packaging testing standard publicly for the first time in Shanghai, before peers from across China's e-commerce supply chain.

The standard will keep evolving and improving, covering all categories, all channels and all tests, to build a safe, green and trustworthy e-commerce packaging ecosystem.

Twenty days later, on October 12, 2019, JD officially launches its full-chain packaging certification and upgrade programme. Which categories will be first to require e-commerce packaging test certification? What comes next for the JD e-commerce packaging standard? How will the JD packaging conformity declaration system be built? And how can brands, suppliers and partner institutions join with JD to build a next-generation, trustworthy and sustainable e-commerce packaging ecosystem?

Mr. Duan Yanjian will explain in detail. A JD full-chain packaging certification side meeting will be held alongside, with JD inviting 50 brand owners and 30 suppliers to ignite a new era for Chinese e-commerce packaging.
