Metsä Board Creates Lightweight Recyclable Paperboard Pack for Chopin Organic Rye Vodka

Metsä Board, a leading European producer of premium virgin-fibre paperboard and part of Metsä Group, has used its Excellence Centre in Äänekoski, Finland, to design a lightweight, strong and easily recyclable package for the new Chopin organic rye vodka range.

For the family distillery Podlaska Wytwórnia Wódek “Polmos” S.A., owner of the Chopin vodka brand, packaging is a key way to express the brand spirit. Marketing coordinator Joanna Dolińczyk said the team wanted the organic product’s packaging to reflect its organic production process, with purity, whiteness and simplicity as the three main goals.

The pack uses protective F-flute paperboard, with every layer made from Metsä Board Natural WKL Bright lightweight white kraftliner. Its all-white offset laminated structure features glue-free flaps and no adhesive. Water-based varnish is used instead of low-migration ink, with only a minimal amount of low-migration ink combined with the water-based varnish, helping create safe, stylish and easily recyclable packaging. Production is handled by Prost-Key Packaging in Poland.

The opening structure allows the box to be opened and closed several times while keeping the bottle firmly locked in place. Curved double folds increase package strength, and the bottle remains visible from the sides. The pure white design includes the word “organic” embossed on the side, highlighting purity.

Iiro Numminen, structural packaging designer at Metsä Board, noted that every part of the packaging communicates the brand promise to consumers. Given the importance of the circular economy, easy recyclability was also a major factor in the design concept.

Design and testing took place at the Metsä Board Excellence Centre, applying cutting-edge packaging technology and design concepts, with high-performance paperboard selected to improve packaging performance. The centre accelerates material and packaging innovation and provides a collaboration platform for global customers and technology partners.

The packaging is made from Metsä Board Natural WKL Bright lightweight white kraftliner and is produced at Metsä Board’s Husum mill. Its virgin fibre is 100% sourced from sustainably managed Nordic forests.
