Jiangsu Changzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau Flags Live Pest, Mold and IPPC Marking Risks in Export Wood Packaging
As international trade continues to expand, demand for wood packaging in logistics keeps rising, but quality and compliance problems are also becoming more visible. The Jiangsu Changzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau recently issued a reminder to companies about the compliance risks linked to export wood packaging.
According to the bureau, several recent batches of wood packaging destined for overseas markets were reported abroad for violations, including live insects, mold and IPPC markings that did not meet requirements.
In parts of southern China, hot and humid conditions remain common, keeping insects and other pests highly active. If wood moisture content exceeds the permitted level, packaging can easily become moldy after spending one or two months sealed inside a container before arrival.
Some marking-applying companies still show limited awareness of quality and safety. If finished goods that have already undergone pest treatment are not properly protected during storage or transport, pests can reinfest the packaging.
A small number of wood packaging users choose suppliers without the qualification to process export wood packaging in order to cut packaging costs. As a result, some export solid wood packaging does not receive effective pest treatment.
In other cases, inadequate staff training or loose management leads workers to add support wood, dunnage or other packaging materials that have not been effectively treated during container loading. This increases the risk that wood packaging carries pests.
The Jiangsu Changzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau advises export wood packaging users to buy from suppliers qualified to process export wood packaging, rather than seek a small short-term saving that may cause much greater losses. When contracting with wood packaging manufacturers, companies should include requirements such as no bark, no insect holes and a maximum moisture content, and use them as acceptance evidence and criteria. During storage, they should apply anti-pest measures—for example, storing wood packaging separately in a clean, dry area, cleaning it regularly and carrying out chemical disinfection—to prevent secondary infestation. They should also strengthen training on inspection and quarantine laws and regulations for wood packaging so workers do not add untreated packaging materials during container loading.
