Heatset Web Offset Coated Paper Printability Standard: Second Drafting Group Meeting Held in Hefei

On January 17, 2013, the second working meeting of the drafting group for the national standard Requirements and Test Methods for Printability of Coated Paper for Heatset Web Offset Printing was held in Hefei, Anhui Province, under the organization of the National Printing Standardization Technical Committee. More than 10 experts and technical personnel attended from Gold East Paper (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd., Hefei Sino-German Printing Training Center, UPM (China) Co., Ltd., Tianjin Toyo Ink Co., Ltd., C&C Joint Printing (Guangdong) Co., Ltd., Hangzhou Dianzi University, Hunan Yueyang Forest & Paper Co., Ltd., Beijing Shengtong Printing Co., Ltd., and other organizations. Anhui Press and Publication Vocational and Technical School hosted the meeting.

The meeting discussed in depth the terminology and technical content of the third draft prepared by the drafting group and put forward specific revision suggestions. For easier application, the standard will define lightweight coated paper and art paper, and a blister resistance property for paper was proposed.

After analyzing more than 11,000 test data items from the previous phase and referring to relevant national standards for paper categories, the meeting decided to change cross-direction basis weight deviation to cross-direction basis weight difference (basis weight uniformity). Taking into account that art paper brightness (whiteness) should meet the requirements of primary and secondary school textbooks and environmental protection, the brightness (whiteness) values of both glossy and matte art paper were lowered to 85. The moisture content figure was revised to 5.0±2.0, adjusting the central value and tolerance range to satisfy printing enterprises' requirements for stable paper moisture content.

For technical indicators that remain disputed—chromaticity, gloss, ink absorbency, printing surface roughness, printing surface strength, folding endurance (cross direction), and stretchability (cross-direction water immersion)—specific data will continue to be determined by relevant printing and papermaking enterprises through testing. The meeting confirmed that the fourth draft from the drafting group will be completed before the end of May 2013, and the third working meeting of the drafting group is scheduled for June 2013.
