China Accelerates Printing Standards Reform: Eight New National Standards Locked in for 2014

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

Standards are the foundation of an orderly industry. China's printing sector has kept expanding, yet its standards framework has long trailed market growth, leaving a gap that the industry feels acutely. To close it, regulators are picking up the pace of standards development. On the latest schedule, eight national printing standards will move into implementation during 2014.

Recently, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) and the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) published Announcement No. 27 of 2013 on National Standards of the People's Republic of China on their official websites. The announcement approves 567 national standards and 45 national standard samples, of which seven fall within the printing field and one covers printing machinery.

All seven printing standards take effect on 1 June 2014: "Graphic Technology - Vocabulary - Part 8: Digital Printing Vocabulary"; "Classification of Digital Printing"; "Requirements for Case-bound Books"; "Requirements for Paperback Books"; "General Requirements for Post-press Processing"; "Classification of Post-press Processing Materials"; and "Graphic Technology - Colour and Transparency of Printing Ink Sets for Four-colour Printing - Part 1: Sheet-fed and Heat-set Web Offset Lithographic Printing". Separately, "Sheet-fed Offset Printing Machines - Quarto and Folio Formats" takes effect on 1 October 2014. For flexible packaging converters and other package printers, the new rules touch on everything from terminology and digital printing classification to post-press requirements and ink colour performance in offset work.
