Beverage Packaging Goes Minimal: Label-Free Bottles Gain Ground as Recycling and Consumers Respond
Beverage Packaging’s New Minimalism: Why Label-Free Bottles Are Moving onto Shelves
International Information Packaging Network
On the beverage aisle, packaging is often the first thing shoppers notice. Yet some drinks are now appearing in a stripped-back form, with the label removed. In March this year, Master Kong introduced label-free bottle packaging as part of its low-carbon approach, taking the label off its Iced Black Tea and becoming the first company in China to take this step.
“Label-free” does not mean product information disappears. Instead, full details are moved to the outer carton, while the bottle itself carries only basic information such as product name and shelf life.
Why remove the label?
Industry sources note that most beverage bottles on the market are recyclable, but their labels are made from a material that does not break down naturally. Recycling technology for that material is not yet mature, which lowers its recovery value. Insiders say that when label material enters the bottle recycling stream, it can contaminate other materials and reduce the quality of recycled plastic. Removing the label can therefore help improve the bottle’s recycling rate to a certain extent.
At the same time, under China’s “dual carbon” policy, some brands are choosing label-free formats while maintaining quality, aiming to support sustainable development and align with consumers’ growing preference for healthy, eco-friendly products.
Will consumers pay for de-labeled beverage bottles?
Consumer reactions to label-free drinks tend to fall into two camps. Some see it as a fresh break from conventional thinking that also meets current environmental needs. Others worry that without a label, key product information is harder to identify quickly, giving counterfeit and inferior products more room to fake goods—a serious food safety concern.
However, Article 67 of China’s Food Safety Law requires prepackaged food packaging to carry a label listing nine major categories of information. Label-free drinks therefore cannot be sold as single bottles and must be bought by the case, so Master Kong has been able to test the waters mainly through online retail. Data shows that the day after Master Kong released the new packaging, its brand WeChat index rose, and supportive comments appeared on review pages. This suggests that despite concerns, Chinese consumers’ support for label-free drinks remains notable.
Overseas, label-free beverages have already been promoted for some time. Japan has introduced a new drink package that does not require label peeling, and regulations allow all containers for beverages and certain food flavorings to omit labels, provided they have outer packaging such as cartons. In the past two years, Thailand and South Korea have also rolled out label-free drinks, drawing considerable consumer interest.
At present, “label-free” development follows the broader market trend and appears to have broad potential. As it spreads, however, product management systems need to keep pace. To combat counterfeiting, brands can add anti-counterfeiting identification codes; to improve recognizability, they can strengthen design on the bottle or cap. Only when label-free products are truly welcomed by the market and accepted by consumers can “label-free” deliver its full environmental benefit.
