Anhui Online Carton Scam: Police Warning Recovers RMB 3,500 for Packaging Buyer

“3,500 yuan—I’ve run out of patience!” That blunt long-distance warning from a police officer proved decisive for Xiaojie, a resident of Nixi Town, Dongzhi County, Anhui Province, after he was scammed while buying packaging cartons online. The other party ultimately refunded the money following police intervention.

An online carton order turns into a scam

On June 16, Xiaojie came across an online advertisement from a company selling paper packaging boxes at low prices. Because he is engaged in daily chemical production and regularly needs packaging cartons in large volumes, he contacted the seller through the advertised details and concluded a packaging carton purchase contract worth about 3,500 yuan.

Persuaded by the seller’s smooth talk, Xiaojie let his guard down and quickly transferred 3,500 yuan. But after receiving the payment, the other party neither shipped the goods nor answered messages, and then disappeared. Realizing he might have been defrauded, Xiaojie went to the Nixi Police Station of the Dongzhi County Public Security Bureau on July 14 to report the case and seek help.

After learning the full sequence of events, officers at Nixi Police Station determined that the other party was suspected of fraud. They also judged that the scam was not a difficult or complicated type, giving them a strong chance of recovering the money.

Police warning by voice call secures the refund

The officers first tried to reach the other party through Xiaojie’s WeChat, only to find that the fraudster had already blocked Xiaojie’s account. They then posed as a prospective customer, won the other party’s trust, and successfully added the contact on WeChat.

After connecting, the officers immediately identified themselves, but the other party continued to stall with various excuses. The officer then issued a voice warning: “I am a police officer from the police station. You are suspected of fraud and have violated the Criminal Law. Return the money immediately, or we will do everything possible to catch you.”

The warning clearly overawed the recipient, who soon returned the money. After receiving it, Xiaojie thanked the Nixi Police Station officers repeatedly: “Thank you, officers, truly. I didn’t dare tell my family that I had been defrauded of 3,500 yuan. Thank you so much!”
