The event draws strong attention from the Vietnamese government and broad public interest. It ranks among Vietnam's two largest exhibitions by scale, influence and internationalization, and its domestic impact is comparable to that of the Canton Fair in China. Held annually in Hanoi, it has been successfully staged 29 times. The exhibition plays a meaningful role in Vietnam's targeted economic development, creating business opportunities for domestic and international exhibitors in economic cooperation, technology transfer, investment, trade negotiations, import and export, product agency and other areas. It serves as a leading platform for centralized exchange and cooperation among exhibitors, trade agencies, economic organizations and investors.

According to statistics from the Vietnamese organizer, the previous edition covered more than 12,000 square meters. It attracted about 500 Vietnamese and overseas exhibitors, with foreign companies accounting for 35% and Vietnamese companies 65%. Companies from more than 20 countries and regions—including China, South Korea, France, the UK, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Russia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao of China—participated and conducted multilateral trade negotiations. About 20,000 professional business visitors and 40,000 public visitors attended, generating transaction value of about USD 200 million.

Vietnam market background

On January 1, 2010, the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area was fully established, with 90% of products to enjoy zero tariffs. Import and export volumes between China and ASEAN countries will grow by 500%. The FTA will become a huge market with 2 billion consumers, USD 1.2 trillion in trade and USD 6 trillion in total GDP, ranking as the world's third-largest free trade area after North America and the EU. This market offers extensive business opportunities.

Vietnam has a population of more than 96 million and is an agriculture-oriented country. Agriculture accounts for 40% of GDP, and agricultural products make up a very large share of its exports. More than 80 types of Vietnamese food have entered the highly competitive US market. In 2005, selected output figures for Vietnam's food industry were: beer, 1.2 billion liters; spirits, 250 million liters; beverages, 800 million liters; coffee, 900,000 tonnes; tea, 150,000 tonnes; dairy products, 547,300 liters; edible oil, 663,000 tonnes; aquatic products, 200,000 tonnes; agricultural products, 37.5 million tonnes.

For years, Vietnam has focused its economic development on food and the food industry. Alongside food and food processing, it has gradually built and expanded animal husbandry and aquaculture, driving diversified development of the processing sector. It moderately develops further processing of meat, milk, fishery and aquatic products, vegetables, fruits, sugar cane and other products to serve domestic and export markets. Although imports continue to rise, Vietnam has become the world's second-largest rice exporter, with fast annual export growth, much of it from agricultural products, food and consumer goods. As a result, Vietnam's need for food packaging, processing and complete processing equipment industries is becoming increasingly urgent.

Vietnam urgently needs to introduce machinery and equipment for the processing industry and increase investment in related supporting industries. In food and food processing, the government encourages the use of local resources for deep processing of agricultural and sideline products to raise export added value. In fruit, for example, annual output exceeds 3.8 million tonnes, but processing technology is backward. Exports remain dominated by fresh fruit, with low added value and relatively high transport losses. To address this, Vietnam plans to import a batch of processing equipment and build a number of fruit processing plants, lifting processing capacity from the current 100,000 tonnes per year to 700,000 tonnes per year.

At the same time, the Vietnamese government encourages foreign investors—especially Chinese entrepreneurs—to invest in the fruit processing industry and offers preferential policies. Industry insiders suggest Chinese enterprises can export production technology and processing equipment to Vietnam, or invest in fruit processing plants there, bringing in equipment and technology and using local raw materials to make fresh juice, canned food, candy and other product lines. As Vietnam's food industry develops, demand will grow for slicing machines, baking machinery, mixers, filling machines, various food production lines and complete equipment. Vietnam currently imports such products mainly from Japan, Europe and the United States, while Chinese products are more competitive in price and quality.

Meanwhile, as Vietnam's agricultural export share expands, its processing industry—especially packaging and printing—urgently needs investment and development to meet growing domestic and international demand from the food and food processing sectors.

As living standards in Vietnam continue to improve, import demand in the food and beverage market is growing rapidly. There is strong awareness of Chinese products such as dairy products, candy, instant food and soft drinks. In just a few years, this has attracted many Chinese enterprises to explore the market, with good results.

Food categories include: candy, canned food, processed food, milk and butter products, instant products, natural food, herbal/plant products, vegetables, dried and fresh fruit, vegetable oil, and sugar/derivative products.

Health food and medicines include: bird's nest, ginseng and ginseng products, nutritional and vitamin products, organic food, natural health food, tonics and traditional health food supplements.

Food additives include: food ingredients, seasonings, sweeteners, MSG, fermentation agents, preservatives and freshness-retaining agents.

Food processing and packaging machinery and equipment
