Zhiyuan Paper Opens New Dongguan Plant, Targeting Leadership as an Integrated Paperboard Supplier

From the verses and rhapsodies that have travelled down the centuries on paper and ink, to today's made-to-order boxes, notebooks, albums and folders, every evolution in the form of paper and board has been carried forward by the people who make paper and the merchants who supply board.

On June 22, Dongguan Zhiyuan Paper Co., Ltd. (hereafter “Zhiyuan Paper”) held the completion ceremony for its new plant. More than a thousand guests — from local government departments and chambers of commerce to national, provincial and municipal associations, partners, customers, peers, friends and media representatives — gathered to witness a moment now written into the company's history.

Fifteen Years of Fundamentals, a Fresh Start from a New Base

“A blade is sharpened by the grindstone; a plum blossom owes its fragrance to the bitter cold.”

Fifteen years on, Zhiyuan Paper has moved from start-up to scale: branches now operate in Hong Kong, Ningbo, Yiwu, Huizhou, Tangxia and Dongguan Zhilifang, its plant covers 30,000 square meters, it employs more than 300 people, and maximum daily output reaches 400 tonnes — a company with solid strength and sharp market competitiveness.

The pursuit of quality never stops. Zhiyuan's team keeps exploring, learning and growing amid fierce competition, aiming to deliver on both product quality and after-sales service. Leveraging the Belt and Road initiative, the company has pushed hard into export markets, shipping to more than 60 countries and regions across Asia, America, Africa and Europe and earning wide praise from users.

At the ceremony, Ren Yina, Secretary-General of the Packaging Printing Branch of PEIAC, and Li Jiong, Secretary-General of the Guangdong Printing and Replication Industry Association, both spoke. They credited Zhiyuan Paper with years of active industry participation and deep cultivation of paperboard production, producing a double gain in social and corporate benefits, and urged the company to treat the new plant's completion as a starting point — maximizing the plant's efficiency, capturing Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area opportunities and writing a still more brilliant chapter.

Speaking as a customer representative, Lin Jichun, General Manager of Shenzhen Qianhai Jinjia Supply Chain Co., Ltd. under the Jinjia Group, recalled that Zhiyuan was a small sampan 15 years ago and is now a large sailing ship. Zhiyuan, he said, has long been Jinjia's best partner, supplying quality paperboard year after year. Jinjia leads China's cigarette label sector and is now working deeply with Moutai, Wuliangye and others in liquor packaging, and he looks forward to keeping the partnership close.

Ouyang Zhong, Chairman of Jintian Paper and a supplier representative, wished Zhiyuan ever-greater strength. Noting that many packaging “heavyweights” were in the room, he called on industry peers to join forces with an open, win-win mindset so that packaging's tomorrow is even brighter.

As the company's leader, Chairman Qiu Zhiyin explained in his address what the new factory means: “the first step toward large-scale operation and an important milestone on the road to diversified business.” He also set out its positioning: “Relying on the new factory's hardware and software, the group will build it into its headquarters base, a talent training center/base and a window for the group's external exchanges.”

Looking further ahead, he set the group's vision: “to become the industry's most outstanding integrated paperboard supplier within five years” and “to build a well-known brand with global influence in the industry.” To that end, the group will build on R&D and production, keep increasing capital investment, expand capacity, complete its industrial chain and open up development space, offering integrated services to the printing and packaging industry.

To the beat of drums and gongs, two golden lions and two red lions took the main stage. Four “eye-dotting” guests — Chairman Qiu Zhiyin, PEIAC Deputy Secretary-General Wang Fengna, General Manager Huang Xianyuan and Guangdong Printing and Replication Industry Association President Chen Ningjun — stepped forward and, under more than a thousand watching eyes, dabbed cinnabar on the lions' eyes. Eye-dotting also carries the sense of “dotting gold,” awakening the lions and symbolizing the company's high fighting spirit.

Guests then placed prepared red envelopes into the lions' mouths for “a good start.” The four lions delivered an extended, lively performance — playing with one another, leaping high, roaming the venue and handing apples (“peace”) to guests — quickly firing up the room. Finally Chairman Qiu “received wealth (vegetables)” from a lion's mouth, a gesture meaning wealth rolling in, which drew knowing applause. The lions then spat out banners reading “Prosperous Business” and “Great Prospects,” sparking yet another round of applause.

Sails were hoisted again as the plant launch pushed the ceremony to its peak. Qiu Zhiyin, Wang Fengna, Chen Ningjun, Huang Xianyuan, Mai Zhiqiang, Ouyang Zhong, Chen Jinsheng and Lin Jichun each held a golden sand bottle and poured out the golden-red characters “Grand Launch of Zhiyuan Paper Group's New Plant,” to thunderous applause...

A clean, spacious, modern workshop then came into view. Inside, giant roll-fed laminating equipment turned out high-quality paperboard that ran continuously along the belt wheels. Zhiyuan Paper now operates seven multi-functional high-speed laminators, drying and shaping production lines and matching testing equipment across its subsidiaries, with maximum daily output of 400 tonnes.

In the warehousing and logistics workshop, stacks of board rose high and dense yet stayed neat and orderly. Zhiyuan Paper has also built comprehensive warehousing and logistics facilities with more than 20,000 tonnes of storage capacity, plus 24-hour loading and distribution services for customers.

Integrated Post-Press Automation Takes the Spotlight

The “Zhiyuan Paper Integrated Post-Press Solution” demonstrated on site was a highlight. Five companies — Zhiyuan Paper, Heyu Adhesive, Keqi Automation, Hongming Intelligent and Shengtu Machinery — combined paperboard, eco-friendly adhesives, paper surface treatment and glue spraying, box making and lid-and-base machines, and case making machines into one integrated package, letting visitors see how tightly the processes behind a fine packaging product interlock, and showing their practice of and sense of responsibility for intelligent, eco-friendly and energy-saving packaging.

All Zhiyuan Paper products meet EU testing standards covering ROHS, heavy metals, halogens and phthalates as well as the REACH (SVHC) chemical prevention regulations, and the company has successively passed the ISO 9001:2015 quality management system and the FSC/COC global forest certification system. Heyu Adhesive's jelly glue is based mainly on animal protein (free of benzene and formaldehyde solvents), making it non-toxic and eco-friendly, while its water-soluble white latex is likewise a recognized green adhesive.

Keqi Automation's plasma surface treatment system for paper products targets cartons with metal coatings, UV varnish or lamination; by applying plasma treatment with standard cold glue, it delivers both strong box bonding and lower cost. Its folding carton glue spraying application scheme (system) minimizes cleaning and setup time in production, and its automatic double-sided gluing machine runs at 200 pieces per minute, with options configured to customer requirements.

Hongming Intelligent's HM-ZD350 fully automatic intelligent box making machine uses a dual-head design, effectively two machines running at once, reaching 38 pieces per minute; the HM-ZD6418 high-speed fully automatic intelligent lid-and-base box making machine needs only one to two operators and can produce 1,200–1,800 pieces per hour.

Shengtu Machinery's products carry a number of proprietary technologies: the ST036XL large-format case making machine has a proprietary soft spine paper device that solves soft-spine case production, plus a proprietary round-corner device for round-corner cases; and the STO40PP+MP fully automatic magnet mounting and lining machine holds national invention patent technology — its automatic magnet placement lowers labor costs while raising profit, and a dual-channel device mounts linings for two cases at once to boost output.

It was a gathering rarely seen in the industry: elites of China's packaging sector came together, joined by representatives of many flagship companies. They witnessed not only one paperboard maker's transformation from small to large, but also the strong momentum of China's packaging industry and the enthusiasm and openness of peers toward its future. Far-traveling people with great aspirations, creating together, will surely win “friends all over the world as close as glue and lacquer” — and with them, “thousands upon thousands of broad mansions.”
