Sustainable Packaging: Awareness Is High, Implementation Still Lags

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

Sustainability remains one of the packaging industry's most closely watched topics and will continue to shape the entire sector's development in the years ahead. The main drivers are environmental pressures, including global warming, energy consumption and limited natural resources. Sustainability in packaging has moved beyond cultural and geographic borders and now attracts broad attention. Modern lifestyles demand longer product shelf life and more competitive brands—key forces behind packaging demand—but they have also made an outsized 'contribution' to waste generation. Under this pressure, the packaging industry has no choice but to act immediately.

Awareness runs ahead of implementation.

MarkDiVito, director of the research team at Reed Business Information, said the survey findings show that packaging companies across four main regions take different positions on what 'green' means. The issues examined include awareness and adoption of sustainability, how it shapes corporate strategy and decision-making, what actions companies take, how targets are set, and how the success of a sustainability strategy is defined.

All respondents belong to the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) and subscribe to Converting and Packaging Digest. The companies they represent are connected to packaging in various ways. Most participants come from packaged consumer goods companies, while others represent raw material manufacturers, packaging producers, machinery manufacturers, packaging service providers and retailers.

A sustainability strategy can deliver multiple benefits for a company. Around one-quarter of respondents hold executive management roles; among them, 20% work in engineering, marketing and research and development. About 10% are involved in packaging design. The study also found that many companies have created positions tied to sustainable development.

One respondent noted that the real challenge is ensuring everyone recognizes the importance of sustainable packaging. Different departments follow different policies and rules. Eight months ago, the company appointed a deputy manager for sustainable strategy and integrated all functions.

Ecological concerns are no longer ignored.

The survey indicates that sustainability has become deeply embedded across the packaging industry, particularly at large companies with more than 1,000 employees and those with formal written sustainability policies; 46% of respondents at these companies said they are 'very familiar' with it. Across all respondents, however, only 21% considered themselves very knowledgeable about packaging sustainability. Nearly 40% reported being 'somewhat familiar', while 10% had no knowledge at all.
