Stora Enso and Tetra Pak Plan EUR 29.1M Polish Project to Triple Beverage Carton Recycling

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

Stora Enso has unveiled a plan to partner with Tetra Pak on scaling beverage carton recycling in Poland, with the aim of tripling its large-scale processing capacity.

Following a full feasibility study, the partners will add a high-capacity recycled carton pulp line at Stora Enso’s Ostroleka mill in Poland. When running, this line will lift annual recycling capacity for used beverage cartons from 25,000 tonnes to 75,000 tonnes, covering all post-consumer beverage cartons sold in Poland and nearby markets such as Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

The project carries a total investment of EUR 29.1 million. Stora Enso will contribute EUR 17 million for the carton-fibre recycled pulp line, while Tetra Pak and Plastigram will jointly invest EUR 12.1 million in a new line that uses patented separation technology to recover plastic and aluminium. Both lines are scheduled to begin operation in early 2023.

Materials separated by the process will be reused in separate streams. Recycled fibre will feed Stora Enso’s recycled board production, and recovered plastic and aluminium will be turned into new product forms, including pellets and foil.

Charles Brand, President of Tetra Pak Europe & Central Asia, said that where waste management and recycling infrastructure are available, carton packaging can already be collected and recycled at scale—but much more remains to be done. Tetra Pak is seeking opportunities across the recycling value chain to improve carton recycling and develop solutions that can effectively recover all packaging components, including polymers and aluminium.

Hannu Kasurinen, Executive Vice President of Stora Enso’s Packaging Materials division, said the company is pleased to work with Tetra Pak and described the move as an important milestone on the road to a fully circular future.
