Shandong Paper Industry in 2020: Paper and Paperboard Output at 19.2 Million Tonnes, Sales Revenue at RMB 136 Billion

A survey of key enterprises and a comprehensive aggregation of data by the Shandong Paper Industry Association indicate that Shandong's paper industry recorded growth in both production and economic performance in 2020.

(1) Main economic indicators. In 2020, sales revenue in Shandong's paper industry stood at RMB 136 billion, a year-on-year rise of 2.26%, representing 18.93% of national paper industry sales revenue (statistical scope). Combined profits and taxes reached RMB 11.7 billion, up 10.38% year on year. Total profit was RMB 7.6 billion, up 15.15% year on year, or 16.61% of national total profit (statistical scope).

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, industry-wide sales revenue increased by 12.40%, with average annual growth of 2.36%. This was below the province's 3.82% average annual growth during the 12th Five-Year Plan period, yet the industry still achieved steady growth.

(2) Pulp production. Shandong's papermaking pulp output reached 6.34 million t, an increase of 1.28 million t from the previous year, up 25.30% year on year and accounting for 31.46% of the national total, 4.2 percentage points higher than the previous year. This comprised:

Straw pulp output was 160,000 t, up 10,000 t from the previous year and 6.67% year on year, accounting for 13.68% of national output of the same variety, 3.77 percentage points higher than the previous year.

Wood pulp output was 6.18 million t, up 1.27 million t from the previous year and 25.86% year on year, accounting for 41.48% of national wood pulp output, 2.76 percentage points higher than the previous year. Within wood pulp, chemical wood pulp reached 3.63 million t, up 940,000 t from the previous year and 34.94% year on year; chemi-mechanical pulp reached 2.55 million t, up 330,000 t from the previous year and 14.86% year on year.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, Shandong's papermaking wood pulp output rose from 4.05 million t to 6.18 million t, an increase of 52.59%, with average annual growth of 8.82%. That was higher than the 7.66% average annual growth during the 12th Five-Year Plan period, supporting sustained medium-to-high-speed development.

(3) Paper and paperboard output. Shandong produced 19.2 million t of paper and paperboard, up 900,000 t from the previous year and 4.92% year on year, accounting for 17.05% of national (industry basis) paper and paperboard output, a slight rise in share.

Output of major paper and paperboard grades was as follows:

Newsprint: 430,000 t, up 200,000 t from the previous year, accounting for 39.09% of the national total.

Uncoated printing and writing paper: 3.7 million t, down 100,000 t from the previous year; of this, light-weight printing paper was 1.02 million t, down 30,000 t, accounting for 21.39% of the national total.

Coated printing paper: 2.25 million t, up 100,000 t from the previous year, accounting for 35.16% of the national total; of this, art (copperplate) paper was 2.17 million t, up 110,000 t, accounting for 36.17% of the national total.

Household paper: 950,000 t, down 30,000 t from the previous year, accounting for 8.80% of the national total.

Specialty paper and tissue paper: 920,000 t, down 50,000 t from the previous year.

White paperboard: 4.05 million t, up 300,000 t from the previous year, accounting for 27.18% of the national total. Of this, coated white paperboard was 3.65 million t, up 300,000 t, accounting for 25.9% of the national total; uncoated white paperboard was 400,000 t. Within coated white paperboard, coated white card was 2.8 million t, up 280,000 t from the previous year; coated white paperboard was 250,000 t, unchanged from the previous year; coated white-top kraft linerboard was 600,000 t, up 20,000 t from the previous year.

Packaging paperboard: 5.05 million t, up 100,000 t from the previous year, accounting for 10.46% of the national total. Of this, containerboard was 2.45 million t, up 150,000 t, accounting for 10.04% of the national total; corrugating medium was 2.6 million t, down 50,000 t, accounting for 10.88% of the national total. Other paper and paperboard totaled 1.85 million t.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, Shandong's paper and paperboard output grew by 7.87%, with average annual growth of 1.53%. This was lower than the 3.34% average annual growth during the 12th Five-Year Plan period, but still represented sustained and steady growth.
