Qinghai Consumer Body Urges Lighter, Greener Mooncake Packaging as Mid-Autumn Approaches
Ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival, China's mooncake market is entering its peak season, with heavily decorated gift sets competing for attention. The Qinghai Provincial Consumers Association has stepped in with a new call for shoppers to follow green, low-carbon consumption habits and choose simply packaged or lightweight mooncake options.
The push comes as mooncakes continue to shift back toward their food-first identity, following sustained calls to practice economy and reject waste. Even so, reporters found that over-packaging remains visible, with some brands prioritizing lavish looks over taste and practical value.
On e-commerce platforms, searches for 'premium mooncakes' return products in novelty formats such as drawers, bamboo baskets and suitcases. Offline in Xining, some mooncakes are wrapped in four to five layers, from inner boxes and sealed pouches to individual cartons and gift boxes.
People in the trade say such excess packaging raises the price shoppers pay, consumes resources during production and leaves behind a large volume of packaging waste after the mooncakes are eaten.
The Qinghai Provincial Consumers Association advises consumers to buy rationally and keep green, low-carbon principles in mind. It also encourages producers to innovate in taste, raw materials, nutrition and cultural storytelling, while incorporating environmental thinking into packaging design and conveying the cultural value of Mid-Autumn mooncakes.
The association also warns against 'functional' mooncakes sold with 'sugar-free' or 'low-fat' marketing hooks. Shoppers should verify ingredients and formulations, evaluate claims carefully and buy sensibly. For online orders, they should use reputable platforms to reduce the risk of expired or inferior products; ask about shelf life and production dates before ordering; avoid near-expiry items given delivery time; and keep receipts and vouchers for complaints to authorities or consumer associations if disputes arise.
