Plastic Film and Metal Clips in Ham: Yurun Attributes Incident to Processing Fault, Denies Expired-Meat Reprocessing

Staff reporter Li Jing — Yurun Group last night denied media reports that it was suspected of reprocessing and selling expired ham. The company said such a scenario is absolutely impossible, and that the affected ham may have resulted from an error during processing.

People's Daily Online reported yesterday that at noon, a star-rated hotel in Hefei told media it had found packaging plastic film and metal clips in Yurun-brand square ham it purchased. Yurun explained that ham production is fully automated and mechanized, and that the film and clips may have been mixed into the ham during packaging.

In its report, the media cited hotel head chef Li Chenglin as saying that for plastic film and metal clips to be mixed into the ham in this way, it appeared more likely they had already been stirred in during the production of the ham meat—meaning the foreign objects were inside the product before it even reached the packaging stage.

The report also said that Huang, a person with many years in the food industry, shared the hotel chef's view. He believes Yurun may have removed packaging from ham approaching or even exceeding its shelf life, sterilized it at high temperature, and then returned it to the market.

Last night, our reporter contacted Li Aibin, assistant to the president of Yurun Group, for comment. In a telephone interview, he said the reports about "reprocessing and selling expired ham" were speculation and false reporting, and that the company is pursuing the matter.

Li Aibin also said that, regarding the incident, the company admits there was a fault in processing; it involved one non-conforming product, with odds of one in tens of thousands. He stressed that for a company as large as Yurun, the problem of reprocessing absolutely cannot exist.
