Packaging e-City Featured on CCTV's Strive: Gong Jingqiang Maps the Packaging Industry's Internet Upgrade
[News from the E-commerce Committee of the China Packaging Federation] Gong Jingqiang, Executive Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the E-commerce Committee of the China Packaging Federation and President of China Packaging Network, told CCTV that his organization launched the Packaging e-City e-commerce trading platform to bring China's packaging sector into the internet era and build a reliable big-data repository for packaging. He described the move as part of deeper integration between industrialization and informatization, industrial transformation and upgrading, and the national Internet Plus initiative. Industry websites, he added, should take the lead in transformation and aim to become national comprehensive pilot demonstration enterprises for modern services.
On November 20, CCTV's Securities Information Channel flagship program Strive held its Zhejiang event at the Weida Radisson Hotel in Jinhua, hosting a local enterprise topic-selection session. The program interviewed selected local small and medium-sized enterprises known for high quality, strong service and long-term growth potential, with the goal of supporting brand development, encouraging innovation by all and mass entrepreneurship, spreading positive energy, and raising personal and brand influence. As one of the national comprehensive pilot projects for modern services, Packaging e-City saw its project leader, Gong Jingqiang, invited to record an exclusive interview for Strive.
During the interview, Gong recalled that in the late 1980s, while working in railway consignment, he observed that adhesive quality problems in product packaging could cause severe financial losses. To meet the needs and trends of the era, he spent years on research and developed a new-generation powdered adhesive, the Gongshi-brand DN-90 series multifunctional starch adhesive, earning two national patents. In the 1990s, with information flow limited in the packaging industry, he founded China Packaging Network in September 1999—the country's first industry portal website—pioneering industry websites in China and helping drive the rapid growth of the internet sector. Sixteen years on, China Packaging Network has more than 500,000 registered corporate members online and has built a substantial database for the packaging and related industries in the Internet Plus era.
Amid the fast growth of the internet economy, and leveraging industry and China Packaging Network resources, he led the creation of the E-commerce Committee of the China Packaging Federation in July 2014. The committee was established to serve the packaging industry better and guide traditional companies toward faster transformation and upgrading. With a mission to advance informatization in China's packaging industry, and recognizing the sector's specialized and customized nature, it independently developed two research outcomes—the EPS e-commerce application software system and the Packaging e-City e-commerce trading platform—to support traditional enterprises in transformation. It also actively responds to the national Internet Plus action plan, helps traditional packaging firms move online, and deepens the integration of industrialization and informatization.
As a leading portal for packaging and related industries, China Packaging Network is shifting toward a third-party e-commerce platform and a service provider for enterprises' “e-commerce market replacement” under strategies such as Internet Plus, industrial big data and the Belt and Road industrial belt. It has also taken part in drafting the 13th Five-Year development plan for e-commerce in the packaging industry. In the broader wave of e-commerce market replacement, it has recorded strong results in software and IT services, warehousing and distribution, promotion and operations, talent training, e-commerce platforms for products and services, and the use of cloud computing, big data and mobile internet in modern services.
China has no shortage of portals serving packaging and related industries, yet a professional online e-commerce trading platform for the packaging sector remained a gap. China Packaging Network moved first, and Packaging e-City emerged to fill that space. Using a trading platform for SMEs as its entry point and B2B and O2O online procurement as its main models, the platform offers packaging companies a green channel for B2B market expansion and a path to transformation. In 2016, Packaging e-City will fully roll out its merchant recruitment and onboarding program, inviting manufacturers in packaging and printing, raw materials, inks, plastics, machinery and other fields to join and pursue e-commerce transformation.
Finally, Gong said he hopes that through CCTV's Strive, SMEs can find “win-win cooperation” in raising brand awareness and influence, integrating resources and building brands. He also hopes more enterprises will join in the future and work together toward the dream of making China a packaging powerhouse.
The episode is scheduled to air on CCTV's Securities Information Channel in the near future. Stay tuned for the highlights.
