The Chinese title of the standard is General Guidelines for Green Food Packaging.
Its English title is Greenfood-Generalruleofpackaging.
The issuing authority is the Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China.
The standard number is NY/T658—2002.
It was issued on 2002-12-30.
It took effect on 2003-03-01.
The China Green Food Development Center proposed the standard.
The National Packaging Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (Tianjin) drafted it.
The drafters are Li Hua, Liu Bo, Feng Yong, and Sun Yueli.
Green food is positioned as pollution-free, safe, and nutritious food. To reduce environmental pollution, protect green food quality, and enforce effective quality management for green food packaging, this standard was created. Annex A is an informative annex.
The standard lays out principles that green food packaging must follow, covering packaging requirements, material selection, dimensions, inspection, sampling, marking and labeling, storage, and transport.
The main text is titled General rule of packaging for green food.
It specifies the principles that green food packaging must follow and covers packaging requirements, material selection, packaging dimensions, packaging inspection, sampling, marking and labeling, storage, and transport.
The standard applies to green food.
Section 2 covers normative references.
These documents become standard provisions when referenced. For dated references, later amendments (excluding corrigenda) or revisions do not apply to this part; however, parties that have reached agreements under this part are encouraged to examine whether newer versions can be used. For undated references, the latest version applies.

Section 3 presents terms and definitions.
The following terms and definitions apply to this standard.
3.1 Reduction (reduce)
When containment, protection, transport, storage, and sale functions are ensured, packaging should first aim to minimize total material use.
3.2 Reuse (reuse)
Used packaging materials are treated in a certain way and put back into use.
3.3 Recycle (recycle)
Discarded packaging products are collected and, through certain treatment, converted into new substances or energy.
3.4 Degradable (degradable)
Under specific conditions, discarded packaging materials may undergo clear changes in chemical structure and physical-mechanical properties, including molecular weight reduction, lower physical-mechanical performance, or decomposition into carbon dioxide and water.
4.1 Appropriate packaging materials, containers, forms, and methods should be chosen for different green foods to meet
the basic requirements of food packaging.
4.2 Packaging volume and mass should be kept low, and reduction should be implemented.
4.3 When technical conditions permit and this aligns with relevant commodity provisions, reusable packaging should be selected; if reuse is not possible, packaging materials should be recyclable; if recycling is not possible, packaging waste should be degradable.
4.4 Paper-based packaging requirements:
— Reusable, recyclable, or degradable;
— The surface must not be waxed or oiled;
— Moisture-proof materials such as plastics must not be coated;
— Carton joints should be bonded, and flat wire staples must not be used;
— Markings on cartons must use water-soluble ink, and oil-soluble ink must not be used.
4.5 Metal packaging should be reusable or recyclable, and sealing materials and interior coatings that harm human health and the environment must not be used.
4.6 Glass products should be reusable or recyclable.
4.7 Plastic product requirements:
— Packaging materials used should be reusable, recyclable, or degradable.
— While protecting the contents from damage, single-material materials should be used as much as possible.
— For polyvinyl chloride products, monomer content should meet GB9681 requirements.
— Polystyrene resin or molded products used should meet corresponding national standard requirements.
— Expanded polystyrene (EPS), polyurethane (PUR), and similar products containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFS) must not be used.
4.8 Inks for printing marks on outer packaging or adhesives for labels should be non-toxic and must not directly contact food.
4.9 For reusable or recyclable packaging, waste treatment and utilization should follow GB/T16716.
Section 5 covers packaging dimensions.
5.1 Transport package dimensions for green food should meet GB/T4892, GB/T13201, and GB/T13757.
5.2 Green food packaging units should meet GB/T15233.
5.3 Pallets for green food packaging should meet GB/T16470.
Sampling should follow the inspection methods specified for packaging materials and related products. General production follows GB/T2828; product certification or supervisory spot-check inspection follows GB/T15239; appraisal inspection and arbitration inspection follow GB/T15239.
Section 7 covers test methods.
7.1 Degradable materials should be tested with reference to GB/T18006.2.
7.2 Polyvinyl chloride molded products for food packaging should follow GB9681; other packaging materials should be tested for hygiene performance according to the hygiene standards for the corresponding materials.
Section 8 covers marking and labeling.
Green food outer packaging should carry the green food mark and include clear instructions for use, reuse, and recycling. Mark design and marking methods should follow relevant provisions. Green food labels should meet GB7718; if the food is a special nutritional food, they should also meet GB/13432.
Section 9 covers storage and transport.
The storage environment for green food packaging must be clean and hygienic. Suitable storage technologies and methods should be selected according to product characteristics, storage principles, and requirements. Storage methods must not cause changes in green food or introduce contamination. Degradable and non-degradable food packaging should be stored and transported separately. Green food should not be transported together with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or other chemical products.
