Molded Pulp Packaging Market Outlook: Egg Packaging Leads as China Demand Reaches RMB 5.5 Billion in 2020
Molded pulp products can be shaped differently to suit end-use requirements and typically act as auxiliary protective materials. Common categories include cushioning packaging, molded pulp agricultural items, molded pulp material molded products, disposable tableware, and other applications.
- Global molded pulp market surpasses USD 3 billion
Drawing on research from several internationally recognized market analysis firms, Grand View Research valued the global molded pulp packaging industry at USD 3.8 billion in 2020 and projected a 6.1% growth rate over the following seven years. Global Market Insights put the global molded pulp market at USD 3.2 billion, with a 5.1% growth rate over the same period. Qianzhan, combining analyses from three well-known global industry research firms, preliminarily estimated the global molded pulp packaging market in 2020 at USD 3.5 billion, with a 5.2% compound annual growth rate from 2021 to 2027.
- Poultry egg packaging remains the main application
Eggs are a staple in Western diets and feature in many popular dishes. In 2020, molded pulp packaging for eggs represented roughly 75% of market demand and is expected to grow at a 5.1% CAGR through 2027. UN figures show global egg production rose from 61.7 million tonnes in 2008 to 76.8 million tonnes in 2018, making the egg sector the largest consumer of molded pulp packaging. Egg processors in North America and Europe predominantly use molded pulp. Because most consumers favor it over alternatives, molded pulp packaging has become standard in the egg industry. Egg demand and per capita consumption are climbing. Economic development in Asia-Pacific is shifting consumer behavior. Lower prices, economic growth, and ample supply mean more people are eating eggs than before, and strong egg consumption growth should continue to drive product demand in the years ahead.
- China's molded pulp market is around RMB 5 billion, with 2020 demand estimated at RMB 5.5 billion
Eggs are the primary global application for molded pulp, and China is the world's largest egg producer. According to the Poultry Industry Branch of the China Animal Agriculture Association, China's laying hen egg output grew steadily in 2020, reaching 18.9565 million tonnes—up 244,800 tonnes from 2019, a 1.31% year-on-year increase.
Estimates indicate that molded pulp packaging penetration remains relatively low, at about 30%; retail and wholesale channels still rely more heavily on plastic packaging. At wholesale prices, one molded pulp product costs approximately RMB 0.3. Taken together, China's molded pulp packaging market demand in 2020 was about RMB 5.5 billion.
