Mars Wrigley UK's Maltesers Boxes Become Fully Recyclable with Barrier-Coated Dividers, Cutting Annual Plastic Use by 82 Tonnes

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

Mars Wrigley UK has stopped using the black PE lamination that has appeared on Maltesers boxes on store shelves since 1930. The change moves the packaging closer to being 100% reusable, recyclable and compostable, adding another example of progress in sustainable packaging.

The earlier multilayer box format, which relied on PE lamination, has been replaced by barrier-coated dividers. According to the company, the redesigned pack will lower annual plastic use by 82 tonnes.

These dividers are fully recyclable, biodegradable and compostable, and the virgin fibre used to make the box is 100% traceable to sustainably managed Nordic forests.

Adam Grant, General Manager of Mars Wrigley UK, said Mars takes its sustainable packaging responsibility seriously and that the iconic Maltesers box is now fully recyclable, marking another step toward packaging that is 100% reusable, recyclable and compostable.

Matthew Terry, Technical Services Director for Western and Southern Europe at Metsä Board, said the company remains firmly committed to helping brand owners develop solutions that answer the growing demand for sustainable food packaging.

Working with its customers, Metsä Board creates innovative packaging solutions that improve consumer experience while reducing environmental impact. In 2020, its sales totalled EUR 1.9 billion and it had around 2,400 employees. Metsä Board belongs to Metsä Group and is listed on the Nasdaq Helsinki stock exchange.
