How Aging Ink Rollers Affect Printing Press Performance - and a More Economical Wash-Up Method

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

The first effects of ink roller aging show up in ink transfer and pressure control. Once the rollers age, ink transfer is poor and the pressure between rollers cannot reach normal requirements. Wash-up becomes time-consuming, laborious and ineffective, and it wastes gasoline; even a two-stage wash-up method is not ideal. Over time, residue and impurities make the rollers age even more severely, and the ink becomes harder to wash clean.

So how can the ink rollers be washed clean? The old method was to sprinkle a designated grade of ink conditioner onto the rollers, pour on gasoline, and wash by running a full-page impression under pressure. The result, however, was heavy consumption of both ink conditioner and gasoline, plus a large amount of setup paper - unnecessary waste. A moment of carelessness could also damage the rollers, so this method was not appropriate.

The method now used is: run the press, pat anti-tack agent onto the ink rollers (it is cheaper than the designated grade of ink conditioner), then add water to the rollers so the ink emulsifies quickly. Next, tighten the ink scraper; by this point part of the ink has already been scraped off. Sprinkle on a little gasoline, and the ink rollers can be washed clean. After repeated use, the results have remained very good.

Its advantages are economical and practical operation with good cleaning performance.
