Green and Smart Manufacturing Lift Demand for Special-Purpose Packaging Equipment as H1 Shows Bright Spots

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China is accelerating its transition into a manufacturing powerhouse, building a modern industrial system and pursuing high-quality economic growth. For food and other manufacturing sectors, packaging remains a critical link. As green and intelligent manufacturing become the norm, demand for special-purpose packaging equipment across manufacturing continues to rise. Policy measures introduced in recent years to support high-end equipment have further strengthened the industry's outlook.

Packaging equipment is machinery that handles all or part of the product and merchandise packaging process. Packaging typically involves filling, wrapping, sealing, and may also include cleaning, measuring, stacking and unpacking. Because material properties and output targets vary, using the right packaging machinery helps manufacturers meet large-scale, quality-driven production needs and reduces the high labor intensity common in traditional operations.

Technological advances have expanded the range of packaging equipment and improved performance, giving manufacturing stronger support. In food production, for example, options include vacuum, pillow, modified atmosphere, granule, powder, paste, tablet, liquid, measuring, vertical, multi-function and heat shrink packaging machines, along with fillers, filling machines, sealers, labelers and coders. To address innovative food packaging formats in recent years, the packaging machinery industry has developed stand-up pouch equipment, parallel robots and flexible automatic packaging machines, integrating advanced servo systems to boost flexibility for flexible production.

National Bureau of Statistics data offers a first-half snapshot. For May, it reported China's total output of special-purpose packaging equipment, with Guangdong, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang ranking in the top four by May output. Shanghai and Zhejiang posted year-on-year growth, while Jiangsu recorded a year-on-year decline. Across the first five months, Shanghai stood out: its output increased year-on-year and its cumulative volume was far higher than that of Zhejiang and Jiangsu, reflecting strong industrial momentum.

Today, a range of favorable factors is injecting fresh momentum into the packaging machinery sector. Even so, broader economic conditions have created challenges for companies in transactions, shipments and other areas this year. With the second half now underway, the market and industry will be watched for more positive signals. Machinery firms are encouraged to seize opportunities, strengthen internal capabilities, deliver solid products and sharpen their market competitiveness.
