GB/T 10342-1989 Paper Packaging & Marking: Options for Flat, Roll and Bobbin Paper
GB/T 10342-1989 outlines the paper packaging and marking choices available to producers and users; the selected option must be written into the purchase order, and any special requirements can be added to the relevant section of the product standard.
It covers flat paper, roll paper and bobbin paper, and applies to packaging and marking under various transport methods.

3 Packaging for flat paper
a. Flat paper can be packaged using six methods:
b. Wooden clamp board packaging;
c. Wooden case or carton packaging;
d. Strip wooden clamp board packaging;
e. Frame board packaging;
f. Flexible packaging;
g. Folded and interleaved packaging.
3.1 Wooden clamp board packaging
3.1.1 For this method, the paper is first made into small packets containing 500, 250 or 125 sheets each.
Each packet is wrapped in one layer of wrapping paper with sizing degree no more than 30 and grammage at least 60 g, or in kraft paper of at least 40 g. The wrapper ends are folded over the packet ends.
3.1.2 The net weight of each flat-paper package must not exceed 250 kg, unless the order contract states otherwise.
3.1.3 Outer packaging
A paper package formed from small packets must be wrapped in no fewer than three layers of 80 g wrapping paper or four layers of 80 g kraft paper.
The wrapper ends are folded over the package ends and sealed firmly.
For printing paper, the second wrapping layer must be moisture-proof paper, or plastic film must provide moisture protection.
3.1.4 Baling
The paper package is placed between two wooden clamp boards, with a layer of moisture-proof paper or plastic film and a layer of 310 yellow board, or another substitute, inserted between them.
The wooden clamp boards must meet the following requirements:
Board thickness must be at least 12 mm. Face battens must be at least 70 mm wide and at least 30 mm thick, or at least 80 mm wide and at least 24 mm thick.
Board length and width must be 5-10 mm larger than the paper dimensions.
Board moisture content must not exceed 20%.
The board surface must be flat; nails must not protrude; gaps between boards must not exceed 5 mm; and no hole on the board face may exceed 30 mm in diameter.
Each board requires one wood batten plus several cross battens. The number of cross battens depends on paper length: four for 1000 mm or more, and three for less than 1000 mm.
If needed, measures that facilitate forklift handling may be adopted according to the order contract.
Baling uses metal strapping or wire of gauge 10 or heavier. The strapping or wire must be centered on the wood battens without deviation and with consistent tension; when wire is used, it must not cut into the boards and loosen the package. Wire twist ends must face outward, the twist length must not exceed 100 mm, and after tightening the twist is bent 90° and driven into the wooden battens. For metal strapping, a groove is cut at the corner where the strap meets the board face so the strap sits recessed, and strap joints are secured with buckles or by overlap. The bale must be firm enough that slight external force will not tear the wrapping paper or skew the paper.
3.2 Wooden case or carton packaging
3.2.1 The paper is made into small packets under 3.1.1 of this standard.
Before loading, the wooden case or carton is lined with one layer of moisture-proof paper or plastic film and one layer of kraft paper of 40-60 g/m²; a layer of 310 g/m² yellow board may also be added if required.
Once the paper is in the case, the wrapping paper ends protruding above the case are folded over the paper package, and then one sheet of wrapping paper and one layer of moisture-proof paper or plastic film are placed on top.
3.2.2 The wooden case lid is pressed flat and secured with two metal straps or nylon woven straps.
3.2.3 The style and dimensions of the wooden case or carton follow the order contract.
3.3 Strip wooden clamp board packaging
3.3.1 The paper is made into small packets under 3.1.1 of this standard, and the paper package then receives outer packaging.
3.3.2 The packaging boards are made of slats at least 12 mm thick and at least 80 mm wide; face battens are at least 24 mm thick and at least 80 mm wide. When strip wooden clamp boards are assembled, the gap between slats is about 80 mm.
3.3.3 Outer packaging follows 3.1.3 of this standard.
3.3.4 Baling follows 3.1.4 of this standard.
3.4 Frame board packaging
3.4.1 The paper is made into small packets under 3.1.1 of this standard, and the paper package then receives outer packaging.
3.4.2 The frame board is a wooden frame with a double crossbar, forming a shape like the Chinese character for sun, made from battens 15-20 mm thick and at least 80 mm wide. Batten moisture content must not exceed 20%. Crossbars must be placed 80-100 mm from the edges, and the central crossbar must sit essentially at the center between the two edge bars. Battens must be nailed firmly, with nails bent over and sunk flush with the wood. Nail length must equal the thickness of the parts being nailed plus 6-11 mm of bent length.
3.4.3 Outer packaging follows 3.1.3 of this standard.
3.4.4 Baling follows 3.1.4 of this standard.
3.5 Flexible packaging
For intra-city transport or short-distance out-of-town truck transport, paper may be formed into packages using the flexible packaging method.
3.5.1 For flexible packaging, the paper is made into small packets under 3.1.1 of this standard. The package must be wrapped in five layers of wrapping paper with grammage at least 60 g/m² and sizing degree at least 1 mm, or three layers of kraft paper with grammage at least 80 g/m² and sizing degree at least 1.25 mm.
3.5.2 For printing paper, cover paper, writing paper, drawing paper and similar grades, a layer of moisture-proof paper or plastic film is interleaved.
3.5.3 The wrapping paper and the moisture-proof paper or plastic film are folded over both ends of the package and then secured with strong glue or adhesive tape.
3.6 Folded and interleaved packaging
Folded and interleaved packaging is suitable for wrapping paper, and other paper grades may use it as needed.
3.6.1 In folded and interleaved packaging, the paper stack is divided by height into two approximately equal parts. The upper part is moved to the point half the paper length; the exposed lower half is folded upward; and the moved upper half is then folded on top. After folding, the package is wrapped in three sheets of wrapping paper of at least 60 g/m² or two sheets of kraft paper of at least 80 g/m². The wrapper ends are folded onto the package surface; the package is tied once lengthwise and twice crosswise with cord. Cardboard strips are placed at the package corners.
3.6.2 The gross weight of a folded and interleaved paper package must not exceed 55 kg.
