From Film to Shelf: How Stand-Up Pouches Are Made, from Printing to Barrier Selection

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News · Source: dgkody 改写

Stand-up pouches have become one of the fastest-growing packaging formats on the planet, showing up in food and beverage, nutritional and nutraceutical products, household goods, pet food, and the pharmaceutical, personal care and cosmetics sectors. Their flexible build gives brands a stronger pull on the retail shelf, while the pouch's own construction lets it stay upright — visible at a glance and easy to grab. Resealable closures and tear notches round out the user experience.

What keeps drawing brands to stand-up pouches

  • Lighter footprint, greener story: against traditional glass bottles and metal cans, stand-up pouches consume less material and weigh considerably less, aligning with plastic-reduction and carbon-reduction goals.
  • Savings along the whole chain: lighter freight and tighter storage requirements cut costs from production through to the retail end.
  • Design latitude: shapes and dimensions can be tailored to the product, whether it is powder, granule, liquid or paste.
  • Stronger shelf impact: standing upright keeps the printed panel facing the shopper, so even small-format packs stand out on crowded shelves.

Starting point: printing and lamination

Building a stand-up pouch takes a complex, multi-stage route. It begins with printing the artwork onto film, usually via inkjet with water-based inks. The printed web is then laminated to the base film using a food-safe specialty adhesive.

  • Base films commonly used include PET, EVOH and PE.
  • A barrier built on EVOH delivers outstanding resistance to oxygen, aroma and water vapor.
  • The barrier you specify is what ultimately determines shelf life and flavor retention.

The bottom fold: the make-or-break step

How the bottom fold is formed decides whether the pouch will stand reliably, and there are two main options: Doyen and K-seal. The essential difference comes down to tooling — a Doyen bottom needs a dedicated tool for each format, whereas a single K-seal tool can run any format. For brands juggling several formats in small batches, that gap shows up directly in changeover speed and tooling spend.

Pouch forming and added functionality

With printing and lamination done, pouches are formed to the required shape and size, and functional features can be layered on:

  • Handle hole — lets shoppers carry the whole pack
  • Zipper — supports repeated opening and closing for multi-use products
  • Matte or glossy lamination — changes appearance and hand feel for a more premium shelf presence
  • Specialty films — add protection against contaminants, UV radiation or moisture on top of the base barrier

To keep products safe, the pouch's barrier layer must also resist puncturing and stand up to environmental stress.

Retort pouches: stand-up pouches engineered for sterilization

The retort pouch is a highly specialized stand-up pouch format built for sterilizing food. Made from a laminate of flexible plastic and metal foil, it enables aseptic packaging of a wide range of foods and takes the place of conventional industrial canning in retort equipment, while raising consumer safety. Compared with glass or metal containers, retort pouches are more compact and lighter, which lowers shipping costs and improves warehouse efficiency.
