Express Delivery Sector Advances End-to-End Green Packaging, with Share of Parcels Free of Secondary Packaging Expected to Reach 90%
As e-commerce platforms roll out promotional events, close to 400 million express parcels have been moving nationwide every day since June. Even so, a journalist's investigation indicates that over-packaging in express delivery remains a notable issue.
Based on the reporter's calculation, the packaging removed after unboxing takes up roughly five times the volume of the item purchased. A large share of it cannot be reused and is therefore sent only to waste recycling stations.
R&D Innovation: Green Packaging Tackles Technical and Cost Hurdles
According to a staff member, Tianjin has around 200 sites of this kind, where about 5 tonnes of recyclables are processed each day; express packaging waste makes up roughly 80% of that total.
China's express delivery sector now handles an average of 350 million items per day and serves nearly 700 million user visits daily, holding the world's top position for many years running. At the China Post Green Packaging Innovation Laboratory, the reporter observed a packaging prototyping machine producing samples.
The introduction noted that degradable tape is a key R&D challenge. After countless tensile tests, researchers introduced a new fully biodegradable, eco-friendly tape in 2023. In waste recycling, the tape does not need to be separated from the carton; under suitable conditions, it can even break down directly into water and carbon dioxide.
Express Delivery Sector Speeds Up Full-Process 'Greening'
A growing number of express logistics companies are also advancing 'greening' throughout the entire process. At an express outlet in Yiwu, Zhejiang, consumers may use the express outer packaging they bring in themselves to offset delivery charges. On the transport side, express firms have swapped 9.6-meter box trucks for 15–17-meter high-capacity drop-and-hook trailers, cutting pollutant emissions per unit of express mail by over 70%. At a postal processing center in Guizhou, many e-commerce products have started using this circular clean-flow box, which needs no tape for sealing because the box has a built-in lock.
