EU Sets Combined Migration Limit for Food-Packaging Ink Substances: Tetramethylbenzophenone and Benzophenone Below 0.6 mg/kg
Against the twin pressures of tighter EU regulation and the financial crisis, exporters must be strict when vetting packaging-material manufacturers. They should choose, where possible, materials that present lower risk and deliver stronger safety and environmental performance, while fully understanding the production process. After printing, solvents in the ink must be completely volatilized, the ink must be thoroughly cured, and the relevant industry standards must be met. Before packaging bags are put into use, companies can also send the materials to qualified laboratories at inspection and quarantine institutions for conformity verification, helping prevent any disruption to customs clearance.
The EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health has set a maximum migration limit for food packaging printed with inks that contain tetramethylbenzophenone or benzophenone. Under the rule, the combined migration limit for tetramethylbenzophenone and benzophenone from printing ink materials in food packaging must be below 0.6 milligrams per kilogram. Printing inks are used across a wide range of food packaging, yet they can contain many toxic and harmful chemicals, including heavy metals, residual solvents, organic volatiles and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and may contaminate food contents through chemical migration. Benzene residues, in particular, pose severe risks to human health and can readily cause cancer-related diseases. The EU action signals that printing inks will also fall within the scope of materials and articles regulated under specific rules.
