Eco-Friendly and Energy-Saving Flexible Packaging: Global Market to Grow 3.5% Annually, with USD 231 Billion Expected by 2018

Over the past few years, flexible packaging companies in China have paid close attention to end-market demand shifts, using them as a basis for optimizing product portfolios, allocating more resources to higher-return segments, and delivering differentiated products and diversified structures. Authoritative forecasts indicate that the global flexible packaging market will maintain 3.5% annual growth over the next five years, with output value projected to reach USD 231 billion by 2018. As a major packaging country worldwide, China needs to keep pace with the packaging industry's overall momentum.

Flexible packaging is defined as packaging whose container shape can still change after its contents are filled or removed. Today's market includes various bags, boxes, sleeves, and wraps made from paper, aluminum foil, fiber, plastic film, and their composites. With vivid colors, versatile functions, and diverse forms of expression, flexible packaging has become one of the leading shelf-ready packaging formats in the packaging sector. Its inherent advantages have also allowed it to steadily take share from materials such as metal packaging and cartons.

As material systems and processing technologies continue to advance, plastic flexible packaging is gaining a more important role across many application fields. The direction for plastic flexible packaging films is clear: companies with small scale and weak quality have largely exited the market, prompting many firms to accelerate large-scale production while adjusting their product structures. On the whole, China's flexible packaging industry has established a relatively complete basic industrial chain, and high value-added products are emerging continuously. BOPP heat-shrinkable film, antistatic film, high-clarity film, retort-resistant film, transfer film, high-gloss film, ultra-thin film, and synthetic paper have gradually moved into industrialization. New products such as BOPP heat-resistant film, BOPP in-line coated film, and BOPP film enhanced with nanomaterials for imitation glass and bulletproof glass are becoming new development trends for BOPP film. On the green development path, BOPP plastic film is a highly important flexible packaging material. It is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic, and offers high tensile strength, impact strength, rigidity, toughness, and good transparency. However, it also faces drawbacks such as easy static buildup, lack of heat-sealing performance, difficult recycling, and susceptibility to contamination.

While continuing to value quality and efficiency, China's flexible packaging industry is now placing greater emphasis on energy saving, consumption reduction, emissions reduction, and safety. This means the sector needs stronger technical efforts to address BOPP plastic film's vulnerability to contamination. For plastic flexible packaging to achieve substantial growth, production technology must be improved and raw material use reduced.

Flexible packaging offers broad market prospects, yet competition among players in this space will only intensify. Companies therefore need to align with the right direction: environmental protection and energy saving. Green packaging is not merely about protecting the environment; it also carries the meaning of resource regeneration. In packaging design, businesses should use a single material or separable, coexisting materials wherever possible, and should lean toward simple structures that are easy to recycle and regenerate.
