DS Smith Launches Algae Fiber Study for Wood-Fiber and Plastic Alternatives in Packaging

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

International packaging group DS Smith has recently initiated a sustainable papermaking feedstock project. The work examines whether algae fiber can serve as an input for paper and packaging products, a move designed to address rising demand from customers and consumers for more sustainable options.

If successful, the project could position DS Smith as an early industry mover in using algae as a wood-fiber substitute for packaging materials. Following initial trials, the company is also assessing algae’s potential in plastic replacement, including barrier coatings that could displace petroleum-based packaging used for food protection.

DS Smith is now in discussions with multiple biotechnology firms. The aim is to explore algae fiber applications across a range of packaging formats, such as box containers, paper packaging, and cardboard trays.

According to DS Smith, seaweed is among a broad set of alternative natural materials the company is monitoring closely. Because of its versatile potential, seaweed use in manufacturing is expected to represent an “emerging market.”

Market research indicates that the algae market for industrial applications is expanding quickly. By 2030, Europe’s algae sector is projected to be worth more than EUR 9 billion and could create around 115,000 jobs.

The algae fiber initiative forms part of a EUR 116 million circular economy R&D program announced by DS Smith this year. That program also covers natural fibers derived from other innovative natural raw materials, including straw, hemp, miscanthus, cotton, and less common sources such as chrysanthemum grass, agricultural waste, cocoa husks, and bagasse.
