China’s Green Gravure Printing Standard HJ2539-2014 Comes into Force on December 1, 2014
China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection has formally released HJ2539-2014, 'Technical Requirement for Environmental Labelling Products – Printing, Part 3: Gravure Printing,' through an official announcement. The standard took effect on December 1, 2014.
Following the 'Offset Printing' and 'Commercial Forms Printing' standards, it is the third green printing standard to be officially promulgated and implemented in China’s printing industry. For gravure printing companies, this signals the beginning of a green printing journey.
Over more than 20 years of reform and opening up, the market economy has continued to develop. Rapid growth in industries such as food, beverages, cigarettes, pharmaceuticals, health products, cosmetics, cleaning products, and clothing has driven rising demand for gravure-printed products, while quality requirements have also increased. China’s gravure printing sector has thus expanded quickly from a small starting point into a substantial industry. According to incomplete statistics, China now has more than 7,000 gravure printing and related enterprises. Among them, more than 5,000 flexible packaging gravure printers, mainly serving food packaging printing, generate an output value of RMB 250 billion.
China’s economy has now entered a low-carbon era, and public environmental awareness is gradually increasing. Gravure printing produces excellent results: rich and clear gradations, a thick ink layer, even ink coverage, high saturation, and bright, vivid colors. These qualities make it widely used in packaging printing, a field closely connected to people’s daily lives. However, its environmental drawbacks are as prominent as its advantages, and its impact has long drawn public criticism. The release of the 'Gravure Printing' standard is therefore important for guiding China’s gravure industry to transform toward energy saving, emission reduction, and environmental protection.
