China-Proposed ISO Packaging & Environment Standards Discussed at Brussels Working Group Meetings

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

The ISO/TC122/SC4 'Packaging and the Environment' technical committee held working group meetings on two new standards and its sixth plenary meeting, with China sending representatives to take part. The sessions put the working drafts (WDs) for two China-proposed ISO standards — 'Packaging and the Environment — Terminology' and 'Packaging and the Environment — Material Identification Marking' — at the center of discussion, along with key technical issues. Both standards belong to the packaging and environment field and were proposed by China.

The meetings took place successfully on 14–15 October 2013 in Brussels, Belgium. More than 30 representatives from China, Sweden, Japan, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Italy and other countries attended.

With approval from the Standardization Administration of China, a Chinese delegation traveled to Belgium for the meeting. The delegation included the head of the domestic technical counterpart unit, the director of the Research and Standardization Center of the China Export Commodity Packaging Research Institute (a WG1 expert), the joint secretary of ISO/TC122/SC4, and representatives from the Shandong Institute of Quality Inspection, the Jiangsu Institute of Standardization and enterprises.

Delegates reviewed the WDs and key technical issues for the two ISO standards proposed by China — 'Packaging and the Environment — Terminology' and 'Packaging and the Environment — Material Identification Marking' — and produced meeting minutes. This meeting marked a key stage in drafting and researching the standards and was crucial in determining their content.

China proposed both standards and, as the convener country, will carry out technical management for the two working groups at every stage of standards development. Launching and developing these standards has major significance for China's further active role in packaging and the environment, for standardizing packaging waste recycling, removing trade barriers, reducing packaging's environmental impact and demonstrating social responsibility. They also create favorable conditions for China National Packaging Corporation to further rely on standardization resources in carrying out domestic industry work. Once the standards are completed, promulgated and implemented, they will play an exemplary role in the development of packaging and environmental standardization in China and lay a solid foundation for the Corporation to play an industry-leading role in this field.
