China Packaging Federation and Meituan Launch Second Green Packaging Directory, Targeting Greener Food Delivery Packaging

Following the close of the 2021 China Packaging Container Exhibition in Shanghai, the launch ceremony for the second Meituan Green Plan “Green Packaging Directory” call for entries took place on July 14 at the New International Expo Centre. Attendees included Wang Li, Vice President of the China Packaging Federation; Han Xueshan, Vice President and Executive Secretary-General; Yang Bicong, Secretary-General of the Meituan Waimai Social Responsibility Committee; Tian Jin, Project Director of the Meituan Waimai Green Plan; Wang Yonggang, Vice President of the Plastics Branch of the China National Resources Recycling Association; and Wang Zhanjie, Vice Chairman of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association. Wang Li and Yang Bicong delivered opening remarks, while Mr. Wang Wenjie, Assistant Vice President of Reed Exhibitions Greater China, moderated the event.

Opening Remarks by Wang Li, Vice President of the China Packaging Federation

In his remarks, Wang Li noted that the rapid growth of the food delivery sector has made environmental concerns around single-use plastic packaging a major public issue, putting the industry under pressure to go green. In January 2020, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment jointly issued the “Opinions on Further Strengthening the Treatment of Plastic Pollution.” A growing number of environmental policies now require food delivery companies to adopt green development principles and make delivery packaging more eco-friendly, which is essential for the industry’s long-term healthy growth.

Wang Li added that as China’s national-level packaging industry organization, the China Packaging Federation has consistently prioritized building a market-oriented green technology innovation system, encouraging R&D in green and low-carbon technologies, and accelerating the commercialization of scientific and technological advances.

As one of the organizers of the China Packaging Container Exhibition, the China Packaging Federation is working with Reed Exhibitions to support the second Green Packaging Directory call under Meituan’s Green Plan. To advance green, low-carbon and sustainable growth in food delivery, the Federation will also back the “Innovation China – Meituan Qingshan Environmental Technology Innovation Demonstration Project” initiated by Meituan, offering support in expert resources, project recommendations, implementation of outcomes, and publicity. The aim is to use technology to drive environmental progress and demonstrations to lead innovation, jointly guiding the food delivery industry toward green, low-carbon and sustainable development, supporting carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals, and helping build a beautiful China.

Wang Li stressed that packaging companies are encouraged to take an active part in the initiative and present more scientific and technological achievements and green demonstration projects to society.

Afterward, Tian Jin, Project Director of the Meituan Waimai Green Plan; Wang Yonggang, Vice President of the Plastics Branch of the China National Resources Recycling Association; and Wang Zhanjie, Vice Chairman of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, each gave keynote speeches.

During the same event, the signing ceremony for the Meituan Qingshan Science and Technology Innovation Demonstration Project cooperation agreement was successfully held. It was witnessed by Wang Yuezhong, Executive Vice President of the China Packaging Federation; Han Xueshan, Vice President and Executive Secretary-General; and many attending leaders, guests and audience members.

Launched by Meituan Waimai on August 31, 2017, the Green Plan is the industry’s first environmental protection action plan. It works to address environmental issues in food delivery by promoting environmental awareness, studying green pathways, exploring scientific closed-loop models, and advancing environmental public welfare. Over the past four years, the initiative has carried out extensive work: it has established more than 1,000 pilot projects for food delivery container recycling and regeneration, brought together 500,000 charitable merchants, reached 1.1 billion online person-times with environmental messaging, and set up a RMB 500 million public-interest Meituan Qingshan Science and Technology Fund.

The “Green Packaging Directory” and the “Science and Technology Innovation Demonstration Project” represent one small step in Meituan’s long-term investment to support the industry’s green transition and the marketization of technological innovation. Meituan said it will continue investing and working with packaging industry partners to build a low-carbon economic future for the sector and support a better life and a more beautiful nature.
