China Approves 4 Food-Packaging Additives, 1 EVOH Resin, and 3 Wider-Use Additives

Under the Administrative Licensing Regulations of the People's Republic of China on New Varieties of Food-Related Products, the National Health and Family Planning Commission approved four substances—led by 3,4-diacetoxy-1-butene—as new additive varieties for food packaging materials. It also approved propylene oxide-modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol polymer as a new resin variety for food packaging materials, and expanded the scope of use for three additives, including cobalt octadecanoate.

1. 3,4-Diacetoxy-1-butene

Chinese name: 3,4-diacetoxy-1-butene

Remarks: It is used as a non-direct-food-contact layer on the inner side of single-use or repeated-use food packaging, separated from food by one or more layers of already approved materials. When used alone, its thickness must not exceed 50 μm; when blended with other EVOH, the maximum use level must not exceed 30% and the thickness must not exceed μm, where x% is the proportion of PO-modified EVOH in the blend.
