Chengdu Secondary Converters Announce 3% Paperboard and Carton Price Hikes

On the afternoon of September 29, several secondary converters in Chengdu, Sichuan, issued price increase notices stating that paperboard prices would rise by 3% in the near term, while some also applied the same increase to cartons. Industry observers say this could be the first round of paperboard price notices in recent times; although the percentage is relatively modest, it has generated significant discussion across the sector.

As has been common in prior years, these notices did more than adjust pricing. Several companies also imposed new terms on order lead times and payment: all existing special-price material orders were canceled, orders requiring production and delivery "upon notice" were declined, and customers with overdue payments were placed on order suspension.

Chengdu is a major hub for the southwest packaging sector and hosts a large corrugated packaging cluster. However, local packaging firms recently faced significant obstacles in sourcing, production, and shipping due to high-temperature power restrictions and repeated COVID-19 outbreaks, driving up production costs. This may be a key reason behind the current paperboard and carton price increases. Some of the notices are listed below:

Hozon Chuangya (Chengdu) Packaging Co., Ltd.:

Effective immediately, the company's paperboard and carton prices are increased by 3%.

Chengdu Qunwang Environmental Protection Packaging Products Co., Ltd.:

Starting at 17:00 on September 29, based on original sales prices: three-layer products rise by 5 fen, five-layer products rise by 0.1 fen; all preferential policies are withdrawn, and no price negotiations will be accepted.

Chengdu Huashengda Paper Co., Ltd.:

After 12:00 on September 30, prices rise by 3 percentage points over the previous level.

Chengdu Zhongtian Chengxin Packaging Co., Ltd.:

From 8:00 a.m. on September 30, prices increase by 3 percentage points on top of the existing price.

Chengdu Jiuhua Yiyuan Packaging Co., Ltd.:

Starting September 30, prices rise by 3 percentage points based on the original price.

Sichuan Hengsheng Packaging & Printing Co., Ltd.:

From 16:30 on September 30, paperboard prices will be raised by 3 percentage points on the original discount rate, and all fixed special prices are canceled. Carton prices will follow the paperboard increase.

Chengdu Kaiyuan Packaging Co., Ltd. / Chengdu Xinhai Environmental Protection Packaging Products Co., Ltd.:

For orders received from 8:00 on October 1, all products will be priced 3% higher than current executed prices.
