Central & South America Flexible Packaging Forecast to Reach USD 5.3 Billion by 2015
An authoritative forecast projects that by 2015 the total output value of the flexible packaging market in Central and South America will rise to USD 5.3 billion, with an average growth rate of 4.6%. This expansion is largely driven by continued growth in supermarket retailing, steady population gains and young consumers' strong preference for flexible packaging. With these forces at work, infrastructure and food processing in the region are also expected to develop faster.
At present, the region's flexible packaging market is valued at USD 4.3 billion, growing at roughly 5.3% annually. Brazil's flexible packaging demand increased by 48%, while Colombia and Argentina together posted a 67% rise. Brazil's food industry now complies with international standards, and 40% of food reaches the household needs of 200 million people through multiple channels. Major events such as the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games are also expected to generate substantial growth. Brazil is currently able to meet its own flexible packaging needs, with only 1% coming from imports and 2% exported to other countries in Central and South America. PET producers are relatively few, and equipment maintenance and servicing needs are mainly imported from China and India, while BOPP and PE film producers are numerous and require no imports at all.
The authoritative analysis further notes that local companies in Central and South America mainly serve the regional flexible packaging market. Many diversified businesses looking to expand through this market may find alliances or acquisitions of other local companies to be attractive options.
