Beyond Green Printing Certification: Why Compliant Printers Need Stronger National Incentives
Over the past few years, “green” has moved from a passing buzzword to a business imperative that printing and packaging companies can no longer ignore, while the 12th Five-Year Plan has lifted green printing to an unprecedented level. As society pays closer attention to environmental and social responsibility, converters can no longer set aside climate change, air pollution, energy conservation and emissions reduction when planning logistics and costs — only by doing so can they reconcile business, environmental and social objectives.
In the industry's view, holding a green printing certificate is not enough on its own. Companies that meet the standard should receive greater policy preference at the national level — funding support, business opportunities and cuts in taxes and fees — so that they are motivated from within to commit to green printing and so that the field can develop on a healthy footing.
The safeguard measures of the 12th Five-Year Plan for the printing industry set out this path clearly: green printing standards must be formulated and refined and green printing certification advanced, alongside implementation of the “Green and Environmentally Friendly Printing System Construction Project.” The project takes primary and secondary school textbooks, government procurement products, and food and drug packaging as its entry points, working with environmental protection, education and other administrative departments in multi-level, multi-faceted cooperation to drive green printing forward. Packaging and decorative printing, meanwhile, is steered toward reduction, reuse, recycling and degradability (3R 1D). The plan also calls for guiding the development of “Green and Environmentally Friendly Printing Demonstration Zones,” backing R&D into low-energy green printing equipment and materials, and improving the mechanism for retiring low-end, backward production capacity.
