Beijing Publication Printing in 2011: Revenue Up, Profit Down 46%

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

Statistics indicate that in 2011, Beijing’s publication printing companies recorded a clear scissors gap between revenue and profit. Industry personnel noted that while sales revenue could appear substantial, the amount left as profit was extremely limited. What led to this situation?

An initial review suggests that the disconnect between revenue and profit in publication printing may be traced to two main areas.

First, operating costs continued to rise while printing prices kept falling — a shared challenge across publication printing businesses. Second, the cost of state-owned enterprise reform was significant. At a large state-owned printing plant in Beijing, for example, three enterprises were merged into one after reform, with a large number of employees redeployed; this single expense reached 180 million yuan, and its effect on profit was evident. At the same time, some private publication printing companies in Beijing expanded quickly and performed well. A private publication printing company with only 30–40 employees, for instance, can generate annual output value of more than 9 million yuan, and after deducting related costs and expenses, its profit remains considerable.

According to 2011 industry statistics from the Beijing Printing Association, Beijing had 1,684 printing enterprises of all types that year, two fewer than the prior year, with main business revenue of 27.51 billion yuan, up 27.8% year on year. Publication printing enterprises numbered 673, three more than the previous year, and their main business revenue reached 10.29 billion yuan, up 7.1%. The 18 publication printing enterprises each with main business revenue above 100 million yuan posted combined main business revenue of 4.026 billion yuan. Although publication printing enterprises saw main business revenue rise in 2011, their profits fell sharply, from 280 million yuan in 2010 to 150 million yuan in 2011 — a 46% decline.
