ANZPAC Plastics Pact Gains Retail and Manufacturer Backing for 2025 Reusable, Recyclable or Compostable Packaging

Published:2026-10-03 · Industry News

Major Australian grocery chains Woolworths, Coles and Aldi, together with leading food manufacturers, have pledged that all plastic packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

That commitment sits within the broader industry ANZPAC Plastics Pact, which is designed to stop plastic packaging waste from being sent to landfill or leaking into rivers and seas.

A report released by the Minderoo Foundation, founded by Andrew and Nicola Forrest, found that 100 companies account for 90% of global single-use plastic production.

The report also showed that more than 130 million tonnes of plastic were discarded in 2019, with almost all of it burned, buried in dumps or released directly into the natural environment.

Nearly 60 organizations across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific have now signed the pact. They include major supermarket chains as well as Amcor, Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Unilever, Arnott's, Asahi, Colgate-Palmolive, Mondelez, PepsiCo, Veolia, PlanetArk, KeepCup, the Australian Beverages Council and TerraCycle Australia.

The ANZPAC Plastics Pact spans the entire plastics supply chain, bringing together supermarkets, packaging manufacturers and retailers as well as resource recovery companies, government agencies and non-profit organizations.

Led by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), members of the new pact have committed to four actionable 2025 targets: eliminate unnecessary and problematic plastic packaging through redesign, innovation and other measures; ensure that 100% of plastic packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable; increase the volume of plastic packaging currently collected and recycled by at least 25%; and ensure that new plastic packaging contains an average of 25% recycled content.
