Today's four major packaging materials are paper, plastic, metal and glass. Paper-based packaging is the fastest-growing segment, has broad daily-life applications and offers easy recycling and degradability, making it an increasingly important part of the modern packaging industry. In line with global carbon neutrality goals, the sector has strong long-term prospects.
I. Paper Packaging Industry Overview
- Industry Definition
Paper packaging generally refers to paper and paperboard containers, such as paper bags, paper cups, paper boxes and cartons, made from paper and paperboard through printing, forming and related processes. It falls mainly into two categories: packaging paper and paperboard.
Upstream, the paper packaging value chain covers the supply of papermaking, inks and other auxiliary materials. Midstream, it involves manufacturing cartons, boxes, labels and other paper products. Downstream, it serves industries such as food, beverages and pharmaceuticals.
II. Current State of the Global Paper Packaging Industry
- Patent Technology
As paper packaging penetration rises and the industrial structure keeps adjusting, patent activity in the sector continues to strengthen. According to industry analysis compiled by Beijing Yanjing Bizhi Information Consulting Co., Ltd., global paper packaging patent applications totaled more than 5,000 by the end of 2021. China was the largest technology source, accounting for about 80% of global paper packaging patent applications, followed by the United States at 6% and the United Kingdom at 3%. Overall, global paper packaging patent technology remains in an upward phase.
- Market Output
In the modern packaging industry, paper-based packaging is the most widely used material, and its output keeps rising. Public data show that global paper packaging output reached 320 million tonnes by the end of 2021, up 10.2% year on year. In 2022, total global output climbed to 360 million tonnes, an increase of 12.5% from the same period in 2021. As carbon neutrality goals advance and sustainability becomes a priority across industries, paper packaging can meet demand for high recyclability and help reduce environmental pollution to a certain extent. It is therefore expected to become a mainstream trend in the packaging industry, with steady growth in output.
- Market Consumption
Global paper packaging consumption has generally trended upward in recent years. Data from industry research institutions show that by the end of 2021, total global market consumption of paper packaging was 270 million tonnes, up 16.6% from the same period in 2020. In 2022, global consumption surpassed 300 million tonnes for the first time, reaching 310 million tonnes, a 14.8% increase year on year.
- Market Size
Paper products have now become one of the most commonly used packaging materials. An analysis report published by Beijing Yanjing Bizhi Information Consulting Co., Ltd. shows that the global paper packaging market size reached US$225 billion in 2021, up 9.2% year on year. By the end of 2022, the global market had grown to more than US$241.5 billion, up 7.3% year on year. The market is expected to maintain a 5.3% average annual growth rate, with global paper packaging market size exceeding US$280 billion by 2025.
