2012 Green Printing Publicity Week Launches with New Edition of Green Printing Handbook

The 2012 Green Printing Publicity Week officially began on November 5 with the Green Printing Promotion Conference. During the event, the new edition of the Green Printing Handbook, prepared by the Department of Printing and Distribution Management of the General Administration of Press and Publication together with the Department of Science, Technology and Standards of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, was released. The publication is designed to help government regulators, printing companies and society at large understand green printing and put it into practice.

Compared with the previous year's edition, the updated handbook incorporates fresh macro-level policies and recent industry developments, making its coverage broader and its guidance more actionable. It remains a key reference for government authorities, printing enterprises and other stakeholders seeking to understand and advance green printing.

Prefaces for the book were written by Yan Xiaohong, Deputy Director of the General Administration of Press and Publication and Deputy Director of the National Copyright Administration, and by the Vice Minister of Environmental Protection. Wang Yanbin, Director of the Printing and Distribution Department of the General Administration of Press and Publication, and Zhao Yingmin, Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Standards of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, serve as directors of the editorial committee. The main content is organized into four sections: an overview of green printing; China's plan for implementing green printing; requirements for printing enterprises and products under green printing; and the China Environmental Labeling Program and its certification procedures. The table of contents and appendix also provide details on the national Announcement on the Implementation of Green Printing, the Technical Requirements for Environmental Labeling Products — Printing Section: Lithographic Printing, and the list of enterprises that have obtained green printing certification, among other items. The handbook is described as an essential reference for domestic printing enterprises pursuing a greener path.

According to the book's publisher, Printing Industry Press, the new Green Printing Handbook was produced entirely around green and environmental principles. It uses 100g eco-friendly paper supplied by Jingpin Paper and eco-friendly ink from the DIC brand, while eco-friendly glue is applied in the post-press stage. Beijing Hualian Printing Co., Ltd., one of the first companies certified as a green printing enterprise, handled the printing work, with an initial print run of 5,000 copies.
